Directly north of Viareggio along the coast you will encounter Marina di Pietrasanta, while a few kilometres inland lies the city of Pietrasanta.
Like countless cities in Tuscany, Pietrasanta has a strong reputation in the art world. However, this is the first city we have spoken about that is known for its modern art just as much its ancient masterpieces. Pietrasanta is widely considered to be the cultural capital of Versilia and named the ‘city of sculpture’ because of its rich sculptural tradition sparked thousands of years ago by the cities proximity to a great number of marble extraction sites. Incredible sculptures ranging from the most traditional and ancient to the most modern and contemporary have been created and displayed in this city at the base of the Alpi Apuane. There is a central piazza surrounding the Duomo di San Martino that quite often plays host to modern sculpture exhibitions. It is quite interesting to see the 13th century Gothic/Renaissance style of their cathedral in stark contrast with the different sculptural events taking place in its piazza.
The Marina of Pietrasanta directly on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west coast of Tuscany. It boasts an incredible expanse of sandy beach and beautiful coast line and remains a very family oriented location on the Versilian shore.
