Radda in Chianti

Take a small detour off of Via Chiantigiana onto Statale SR429 and find two little towns that have retained their medieval charm: Radda in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti.

Radda in Chianti, in the heart of the region, continues to be protected by an ancient wall which was erected during the same battle between Florence and Siena that has shaped much of the regions history. There are many military posts left over from centuries past as well as one of the oldest Roman churches in the region, Santa Maria Novella. This church is incredibly interesting not only because it was built in the 5th century, but because it is the sole church in Chianti that has conserved its original pillars which have capitals that have been carved in relief with images of animals, plants, sea creatures and stars.

Radda in Chianti is one of 184 Italian small towns awarded with the "Bandiera Arancione" (Orange Flag) for excellency in tourism, hospitality and the environment.
