Saturnia is a famous location for its thermal baths and is placed in Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, precisely in the green area of Maremma– between Monte Amiata and Colline del Fiora and Albegna. This very ancient resort is widely renowned thanks to its sulphureous waters, which have excellent therapeutic properties.
Although it is impossible to say for sure, Saturnia is arguably the oldest city in Italy and dates to the 12th century BC. It is most widely known for its incredible natural hot springs which are associated with a An age old legend that describes their creation. As with most legends, it is a tale of a seemingly never ending battle and its brilliant resolution.
Ancient man was starting to annoy the god Saturn with its stupidity; therefore, in an effort to end the relentless fighting, he threw a piece of lightning to the earth. Where it struck, a volcano of sulphuric water erupted and has been flowing at 800 litres a second ever since. The water remains around 37°C (98°) and is said to have created a more peaceful and wise population with some who believe it has healing powers. Legends aside, this minerally plentiful water is very good for the skin, musculature and acts as somewhat of a natural hot tub where people from all over gather to relax.
The wellness and spa complex is located inside a tourist area which is 30 km wide, tucked away among the unspoilt vegetation of Maremma.
