Piombino is a port city and it has ferry connections to the islands directly off of its coasts. Piombino is a larger gateway city to the relatively large Island of Elba, due south west of its shore.
Piombino rests on the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Monte Argentario by approximately 80 kilometres and is considered part of the ‘Etruscan Coast’ which stretches from Piombino in the Maremma Livornese north through the city of Livorno, named so for its large number of Etruscan necropoli. It is a city much larger than Monte Argentario but with very similar maritime traditions and hilly coasts. There are a multitude of churches, military fortifications, archaeological sights and museums but the typical image of Piombino remains Piazza Bovio and its light house with its panoramic view of the coast as well as its ancient Porto di Falesia which ferries across to the Island of Elba.
