The Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) is an international award given by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) in collaboration with two UN agencies: UNWTO (United Nations World Organization for Tourism) and UNEP (United Nations Environment Program).
The Blue Flag was born in 1987, coinciding with the European Year for Environment, and is annually realised to those places that respect certain quality criteria, such as: quality of bathing water, quality of services, cleanliness of the beaches and the absence of sewage.
Initially, the European Award was given to European Countries only but, thanks to the collaboration with the UN Agencies (UNWTO and UNEP), the Blue Flag today is given in over 40 Countries.
