Scarlino

Scarlino is a small district of about 3600 inhabitants in the province of Grosseto. It is located about 250 mt slm and its borders are the district of Follonica to the north-west, the district of Massa Marittima to the north, the district of Gavorrano to the east and the district of Castiglione della Pescaia to the south. To the west instead, it overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and part of the Gulf of Follonica.

The historic centre - a delightful Medieval village in which prehistoric remains have been found that date back to the Bronze Age and to the Eneolithic - is located on the slopes of Monte d'Alma at about 550 mt slm.

The municipal area of Scarlino covers an area of about 90 km², from the slopes of Poggio Ballone to its coastline formed by the promontory of the Bandite di Scarlino and by a strecth of beach of about 13 km that includes the protected natural reserves of Calaviolina and Cala Martina.

Particularly stricking and typical of the town is the Rocca Pisana that dates back to the 13th century and in front of which it is possible to enjoy the view of the archaeological park and of the walls that, starting from there encompass the entire village and contribute to guarantee to the city the maintaining of the typical charme of old Medieval villages. There are three gateways to enter inside the old village that are: Porta della Fonte, Porta Scabris and Porta a Mare.

Among the pieces of architecture of particular interest we would like to mention the church of San Donato, the church of San Martino, the Oratory of the Holy Cross, the Town Hall, the Rocca aldobrandesca and several ruins and remains of other religious buildings that are well worth a visit among which: the Convent of Our Lady of the Angels, the church of Sant'Andrea in Lodena and the Hermitage of Crocina.

The sea is about 7 km far from the village and presents a modern port that was already used during Roman times.

In Scarlino you can find a public natural reserve of about 1000 hectares mostly constituted by wooded and marshy areas, that is aimed also to protect some of the endangered birds among which the marsh harrier and the mallard.

The surrounding hills - full of chestnuts and holm oak - are ideal destinations to do excursions into the green and calm of the typical nature of Maremma.

In addition, the territory of Scarlino mainly stands out for its culinary tradition, for an agriculture of quality and for the valorisation of local products including olive oil and chestnuts.
