Monte Argentario is a port city and it has ferry connections to the islands directly off of its coasts. Monte Argentario, encompasses Porto Stefano on its northern bank and provides ferry services to the much smaller Island of Giglio- also south west of the peninsula.
Monte Argentario, the peninsula that is part of the Maremma Laziale, connected to the main land by Orbetello and the Tombolo della Giannella, was held under Spanish control in the 1500s and in the hills overlooking Porto Stefano on the north, you will see the ever present Spanish fortification, (Fortezza Spagnola) built in that time. With its two ports, Porto Santo Stefano on the north and Porto Ercole on the south, there is a strong marine culture and connection to the sea. The peninsula its self is composed of mountainous tree covered hills and remains mostly free of construction, with greater patches of colorful buildings grouped near the ports.
