Part of the Livornese coast, Vada is the epitome of Mediterranean beaches. Seemingly tropical, its water is clear and emerald blue and floats upon white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see. Any number of aquatic sports can be found including surfing, wind surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling.. and the list goes on. The unique geographical elements have all come together to make this beach long, wide and bright white even though it, along with the other cities along the coast, are contained from behind by mountainous hills.
Like Castiglioncello, Vada was first settled in the bronze age and contains some very important archaeological remains. The small city of Vada was utilized by the Etruscans and later by the Romans for its beauty and as the port city of Volterra and the archaeological remains include the famous ‘Terme di San Gaetano’ (thermal baths of Saint Gaetano) used by the Romans between the 4th and the 1st centuries BC as well as other historical remnants from the 1200s like their ‘Torre di Vada’ (Tower of Vada), constructed to watch over the shore.
