Follonica is a pleasant, modern and welcoming small seaside town in the province of Grosseto. It overlooks the centre of the homonym gulf, in front of the isles that compose the Tuscan Archipelago.
Follonica is one of the most famous towns in Tuscany for seaside tourism, very crowded in summer when you can find there mainly families with children who generally choose such a destination for their holidays for many reasons: safety of the sea, green pinewoods where to find relief during the summer heat, tranquillity that is possible to breathe there even in peak season, and the huge number of services offered.
Its morphology presents both wide white sandy beaches and small unspoiled coves touched by crystal clear sea and surrounded by dense vegetation. It is no coincidence that the city has received a number of important certifications among which the Blue Flag for the quality of the sea, of the coast, of the services offered and for security.
To meet the needs of the constant seaside tourism demand, the city is full of any kind of accommodation, from hotels to b&b, from farms to apartments for rent to campings. You can find pizzerias, restaurants, bars and all kinds of clubs at any corner, aimed to satisfy the needs of children and adults.
Thanks to its central position Follonica is easy to reach by all the major public and private means of transportation. It is situated on the S.S.1 Aurelia - one of the main roads in Italy - and its station is on a main communication artery, the Genova-Roma railway line.
In Follonica you will never be bored since you will have the possibility to do lots of activities of any kind, from walking and cycling excursions - following one of the nearby reported and accessible inland trails - to sailing, from kite surf to canoe, from fishing to scuba diving, always respecting the environment and the rules dictated by common sense in order to preserve intact still for a long time this pleasant corner of Maremma.
Moreover, going ahead inland you can reach the foothills of the Colline Metallifere, one of the most fascinating natural areas of Maremma, certainly worthy of mention and attention from visitors.
Folklore and cultural activities represent - as in any proper Tuscan town - the base of city life. In this regard we would like to mention two major events that take place here during the year: the Carnival - allegorical event that follows the style of the famous Carnival of Viareggio, with papier-maché and iron floats realized by the different districts of the city - and the Palio delle Bandiere e dei Territori (Palio of Flags and Lands).
In addition to these you can find - especially during summer season - events that include art activities of all kinds, from dance to music, to visual arts to theatre.
In Follonica you can also find interesting museums: the Museum of Iron and Cast Iron - whose track touches the stages of the processing of iron from Etruscan times to 1960 - and the Civic Art Gallery - situated just on the waterfront and whose rooms host works by local painters and other contemporary artists and where expositions of modern and contemporary art regularly take place dedicated to different art dedicated to different art genres.
