Barga is one of 184 Italian small towns awarded with the "Bandiera Arancione" (Orange Flag) for excellency in tourism, hospitality and the environment. The beauty of this small town in the province of Lucca made it also one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (Most beautiful villages in Italy).

Barga is a Medieval municipality of the Serchio Valleys in the heart of Garfagnana, a mountainous region between the Apuan Alps and the Appennines. The most ancient part of Barga is situated on the top of a hill and presents the typical features of a medieval village surrounded by defensive walls with the main church (the Cathedral or Duomo) in the center that stands on all the other constructions.

Castelnuovo is positioned at the heart of the Garfagnana, and started as a small village but became the centre of commerce and later the main city in the province of Lucca during the 800s. It was an easy stop for merchant trade coming from Lucca, situated 40 km away, and its accessibility in the past has shaped it into the city it is today. The centre of the city is rather built-up, with many traditions as old as their medieval structures and tiny winding streets. One of which includes a market called “dei banchetti” which began as a vendor and trading market in the middle ages and is still hosted by the city every single Thursday. Furthermore, every first Sunday of the month their piazza hosts a large market with local merchants and vendors that sell the locally produced products mentioned above as well as many other artesional goods.

This fortress which rests in the valley of Sirchio, San Romano rests on one of the most beautiful panoramic views in all of the Garfagnana and is considered to be the most important military vestige in the area. It was built in 1285 during a tumultuous time in history characterized by a series of battles between Florence and its surrounding areas. Thanks to its elevated position on the top of a tall hill, it has remained quite well in tact throughout the centuries.

The Natural Park of the Orecchiella is divided into three natural reserves including the Orecchiella, the Pania di Corfino and the Lama Rossa. All three of the denominations rest in the ‘Alto Serchio’ which is a high valley which rises above the Serchio River at its base. The area is characterized by rolling, tree covered mountains which reach 2054 meters at the highest point and as a breathtaking location to hike, bike, trek, whatever!

Il Paese Sommerso di Fabbriche di Careggine (The Submerged Village of Careggine) - Such a curious place, Careggine. This city, once inhabited by a small population of people during the middle ages, is now only visible once every 10 years when it re-emerges from its watery resting place. The ancient inhabitants had built a church surrounded by a handful of houses directly at the centre of a basin and were apparently forced to move out when, for whatever reason, the valley they called home became submersed with water.
