This fortress which rests in the valley of Sirchio, San Romano rests on one of the most beautiful panoramic views in all of the Garfagnana and is considered to be the most important military vestige in the area. It was built in 1285 during a tumultuous time in history characterized by a series of battles between Florence and its surrounding areas. Thanks to its elevated position on the top of a tall hill, it has remained quite well in tact throughout the centuries.
The structure of Fortezza della Verucole was recently restored (but not renovated or rebuilt) and this beautiful example of medieval architecture is once again open to the visiting public.
