The Natural Park of Maremma, initiated in 1975, is a natural reserve of about 9800 hectares which extends from Principina a Mare in the district of Grosseto to Talamone in the district of Orbetello.
The park includes some of the most beautiful coasts and waters of Tuscany, protected and kept intact cause this is a special protection area by agencies and institutions dealing with the preservation of landscape by human action and speculation.
In the full area live many species of animals and plants, also thanks to the variety of this territory going from hilly zones, to plains, to coastal dunes and cliffs on the coast. In particular the wetlands at the mounth of the Ombrone river are home to important colonies of marsh birds.
A special role is played by the Uccellina Mounts, mountain range that reaches the highest peak with Poggio Lecci - 417 mt above sea level - and extends in the districts of Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello, making almost the entire area of the park - that is for this same reason also called Parco dell'Uccellina (Uccellina Park).
Besides a huge natural heritage the today protected area presents very interesting historical features. Particularly susceptible to the incursions of the growing Turkish power since the 15th century - piracy policy was part of the culture of this population who had to divide war chest with the government for which this activity represented therefore a major source of income - in this area lots of watchtowers were constructed to defend the coast. Some of the Medieval towers are still today visible in the districts of Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Orbetello,
Monteargentario and Capalbio. Just to mention some of them: the Trappola tower and the Ridotto of Bocca d'Ombrone, the tower of Cala di Forno, the tower of Cannelle and the towers of Peschiera, Maddalena and Cannelle.
Another archaeological site of special interest is represented by the Abbey of San Rabano that dates back to 1100 and has been recently restored.
