Massarosa is the city furthest south in the Versilia and instead of framing the ocean, it rests on the shore of the Lago di Massaciuccoli (Lake Massaciuccoli) and in the hills at the foot of the Alpi Apuane. It has traces from the Palaeolithic time in pre-history and was later inhabited by the Romans – remains of their ‘terme’ (Roman thermal baths) can still be seen today.
