The entire area of Maremma has a good connection to the main cities of Tuscany and Lazio thanks to a good roads and railways network.
Due to its central position - in the middle between the chieftowns of Tuscany and Lazio - and thanks to its coast overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the major Tuscan islands, this zone is easily accessible to visitors by any kind of mean of transportation, included private and line boats.
Some of the major Italian airports are also very close and the coast, the mountain and the inland of Maremma are easily reachable from there, also by public means of transportation.
TO REACH MAREMMA BY CAR
Those who travel by car and come from the North just have to take the SS1 Aurelia or, from Florence, the highway first and freeway Firenze Siena then for about 55 km. Once there just follow the directions to Grosseto while taking the S.S. 223 for about 65 km. When you arrive in Grosseto you will find the different branchesthat lead to the coastal towns or to the the inland areas and to the Mount Amiata.
From the South instead, take the highway exit Roma Civitavecchia and continue on the SS1 Aurelia.
The internal road network that connects the coast to the Mount Amiata passing through the hilly areas of Saturnia, Pitigliano, Manciano, Scansano, Sovana, Sorano and all the surrounding villages, is really varied and well maintained. The provincial and regional roads become more tortuous while getting closer to the top of the mountain, anyway being never too much uneven.
To sit in your car and take one of the roads that enter the inland till to reach the peak of the mountain, means to cross an endless variety of landscapes that fill your eyes and all your senses. From panoramic views on the coastline that shows a blue sea and a dense vegetation typical in this area, you will pass to the huge tracts of green fields - populated by herds of cows and ships - that mix with the relaxing yellow shadowed cultivated fields and to the red stir clods of muds covering land, till arriving to a dense vegetation of chestnuts punctuated by huge rocks resting on the steep terrain and fields of colourful flowers that bring visitors up to the 1738 meters of the Amiata peak.
TO TRAVEL IN MAREMMA BY TRAIN AND BUS
The railway network that connects the different towns of Maremma among them and to the various Tuscan provinces is also very developed.
From Florence, Pistoia, Lucca, Arezzo, Siena, Pisa, Livorno and relative provinces regularly depart trains directed towards the main stations in Maremma that are: Capalbio, Orbetello - Monte Argentario, Albinia, Alberese, Grosseto, Gavorrano, Monte Antico (Civitella Paganico), Montepescali, Follonica, Roccastrada, Scarlino, Sticciano, Talamone.
Where the train does not arrive, travelling is made available through the buses of the R.A.M.A. trucking company (also active on the Giglio Island) that offers a good urban and suburban service of connection also to the villages on the Mount Amiata and to the inland villages.
The area where the R.A.M.A. trucking company operates includes the towns of Grosseto, Scansano, Roccalbegna, Manciano, Magliano in Toscana, Semproniano, Saturnia, Paganico, Castel del Piano and Arcidosso for the suburban service, while the urban service is supplied in the cities of Castiglione della Pescaia, Follonica, Grosseto, Manciano, Massa Marittima, Orbetello and on the Mount Argentario.
AIRPORTS NEAR MAREMMA
Through the public transportation system is also possible to reach the different zones of Maremma from some of the major airports in Italy nearby situated. The main airports nearby located are: Leonardo da Vinci airport in Roma Fiumicino, airport of Roma Ciampino, airport Galileo Galilei in Pisa and airport Amerigo Vespucci in Florence, besides the airport of Grosseto that is used as a stopover for civilian, charter and private flights, even if it is one of the main military airports of Italy.
